The Fusion of Leaf and Sulfur

The Art of Sulphured Leaf

Through the controlled reaction of ultra-thin metal leaf and sulfur vapor, a striking array of colors emerges, revealing the complexity of this age-old craft. Requiring both precision and mastery, each sulphured leaf is a testament to the artisan’s expertise and the sublime interplay between metal and sulfur.

1. Metal leaf selection.

Sulphured leaf relies on exceptionally thin metal leaf, commonly silver or copper. To maintain precision, these leaves undergo a refining process to ensure uniformity.Consistent quality is key, as only well-balanced metal leaf can produce the desired sulphured leaf effects.

2. Precision Sulfur Application

Sulfur plays a vital role in the sulphuring process. It is carefully spread across fabric or paper to release controlled sulfur vapor during heating.Achieving even distribution is critical to ensure uniform exposure and consistent results.

3. Applying the Protective Layer

The protective layer plays a key role in defining the patterns of sulphured leaf by controlling sulfur vapor penetration.By adjusting the permeability of pigments, skilled artisans can craft intricate and unique designs.

4. Heating the Metal Leaf

A custom iron delivers steady, high-temperature heat to the metal leaf. Mastering temperature and timing is essential, a skill honed through years of practice. The artisan must prevent scorching while ensuring enough heat for the full transformation of the leaf.

Each sulphured leaf, despite being made with identical materials and processes, develops its own distinct patterns and character. No two are ever the same, as if each carries a spirit of its own.

(All three below are Ebony Sulphured Silver Leaf Small Wallets.)

We created distinct themes inspired by the three materials used in the sulphured leaf process.

Sulphured silver leaf

The sulphur-treated silver leaf forms lunar-like craters, with vibrant cyan-blue accents shimmering over platinum. Its quiet elegance conceals a depth of hidden intensity.

Sulphured copper leaf

Through the firing process, red copper leaf takes on a fusion of soft pink and violet-blue tones, mirroring the luminous hues of a sunset, evoking deep emotion.

Sulphured brass leaf

Brass leaf, after sulphurization, evolves into Autumn Patina Leaf, where green and brown intertwine, highlighting structured chrysanthemum patterns. It reflects both order and transformation within its surface.

In refining our sulphured leaf process, we tested numerous adhesive and protective coating formulations.

The adhesion quality plays a crucial role in the final outcome—ensuring both secure bonding and surface durability. To strengthen the foil’s resistance, we applied four layers of high-hardness protective coating, offering robust daily protection.

A Craft on the Brink of Extinction

Mastering sulphured leaf requires years of skill refinement. In intense heat and still air, artisans manipulate volatile sulfur-metal reactions, capturing breathtaking iridescent hues in an instant. This craft, once widespread, is now vanishing. Each creation is irreplaceable and available only by reservation.

CLASSIC TREETHER

Combining leather and natural wood, which has various textures and colors that become more unique with use.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve applied four layers of durable protective coating, making it highly resistant to scratches and wear under normal use. However, strong impacts or sharp objects may still cause damage. If needed, we offer a Kintsukuroi Warranty for repairs.

No, the four layers of protective coating prevent oxidation and discoloration.

Yes, Treether is made from real wood. Its color naturally changes over time as it absorbs hand oils or dries out in different environments. With prolonged use, the wood fibers refine, creating a smoother texture.

Each Treether wallet carries a natural grain pattern that can never be duplicated. As you use it, the wood matures and evolves, reflecting your journey and making it truly yours.

While Treether is durable, it may break under:

  1. Strong impacts or sharp object punctures.
  2. Excessive bending against the wood grain (e.g., sitting on it in a back pocket).
  3. Prolonged exposure to water or high humidity.

We apply a wax coating for basic water repellency, but prolonged exposure to moisture may cause deformation. Handle with care.

Not really! We pre-condition each wallet with beeswax before shipping. You can let it evolve naturally or apply our beeswax occasionally for extra care.

No, it contains recycled leather (made from animal leather) and beeswax. Please confirm before purchasing if you require a fully vegan product.
